The convenience store retail business is the largest 7-Eleven licensee in the United States and operates approximately 300 convenience stores in central and west Texas and New Mexico.

Positition Summary:

The Inspector is accountable to perform visual and nondestructive inspections in accordance with the API and ASME standards on piping, pressure vessels, towers, heaters, exchangers, storage tanks, boilers, and any other critical process equipment for purposes of recommending and approving repairs or certifying compliance. This role communicates any problems, discrepancies, or other noteworthy incidents to the Operations Supervisor and/or Dispatcher without delay.

 

Job Accountabilities:

  • Inspect and determine serviceability of piping, vessels, towers, heaters, exchangers, storage tanks, boilers, and any other critical process equipment
  • Inspect all non-pressure retaining components including, but not limited to, foundations, fireboxes, burners, stacks, dampers, structural members, tank seals, spring hangers, etc.
  • Observes all Inspectorate applicable federal and state regulations and standards, Refinery, Terminal and/or vessel requirements, including safety and measurement standards
  • Ensures that all equipment is deemed acceptable for continued service.
  • Determine equipment life, set test and inspection frequency and predict renewal
  • Assist in developing a regular monitoring schedule for process piping and equipment and perform inspections.
  • Maintain communication with Maintenance, Operations and Engineering and Contractors on various matters including inspection/code requirements, condition of equipment, workmanship that does not meet requirements, and recommendations regarding repair of equipment or poor workmanship
  • Assures pressure equipment integrity, safety, and reliability by assessing the effects of corrosion or other deleterious processes on equipment and taking corrective action
  • Conduct foundation surveys to detect evidence of subsidence or differential settling
  • Maintain and update mechanical integrity documents
  • Provide repair recommendations on shutdown of equipment and piping due to corrosion and serviceability. Input all repair recommendations into EAM in order to properly plan and schedule for an outage or turnaround.
  • Be familiar with PS AIM or other inspection data base for inspection data and inspection frequencies.
  • Gather, analyze field inspection data re: wall thickness readings, on piping and equipment for inspection programs and determine/report corrective action as part of inspection program
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records on the inspection and maintenance of each piece of pressure equipment and piping in their unit assignment
  • Ensure certifications are maintained
  • Ensure all inspection schedules are completed on time. If for some reason inspections become overdue, provide all inspection data and information to the Inspection Supervisor in order for an inspection deferral to be generated.
  • Assign the inspection interval for pressure equipment (vessels, columns, piping, exchangers, etc.) monitor the condition of this equipment using appropriate strategies and tools to detect potential damage mechanisms
  • Develop and maintain the inspection strategies for equipment, special emphasis programs such as the Retroactive PMI, Wet H2S, CUI, and HTHA, setting of intervals and suggested corrosion rates.
  • Develop and maintain a schedule for internal, external, on-stream and corrosion inspections for all equipment
  • Discusses corrosion concerns or operating events that could have detrimental effects on equipment with the appropriate personnel
  • Collaborates with Operating and Maintenance Departments to determine the most practical and cost effective way to perform maintenance
  • Investigates and documents all failures of pressure equipment to determine the cause or suspected cause and mitigations to prevent future failures
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Five (5) years of experience with refinery process units, petrochemical facility or pressure vessels, fixed equipment and piping systems or Two (2) years in an industrial inspection role
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the corrosion processes
  • Extensive working knowledge of all ASME, ANSI, API & NBIC Codes
  • Proven knowledge of requirements and concepts of Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) and applies appropriate NDE practices and methods to obtain appropriate information.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) API Certifications API 653 Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector, API 570 Piping Inspector, or API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector. Basic understanding of metallurgy, corrosion, and welding processes.
  • Proven knowledge of basic math
  • Strong knowledge in process safety programs including mechanical integrity, incident investigations, process hazard analysis, Management of Change, procedure development
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of refinery/petro-chemical maintenance procedures including safety procedures involving repair and maintenance of equipment
  • Ability to abide by confidentiality requirements when working with sensitive information, results, and communications required
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Proficient in utilizing computer and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills Ability to interact effectively and positively with all levels of Company personnel
  • Must be able to read and draw isometric drawings Must be able to work in a plant environment involving climbing, confined spaces, etc.
  • Must pass drug test and background check
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

 

Preferred Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an industrial inspection role
  • Advanced understanding of oil refining processes (FCC, Reforming, hydrotreating, crude distillation, extraction, sour water/gas services)
  • National Board of Boilers & Pressure Vessels Inspector (NBIC) certification
