JOB SUMMARY
The Gas Plant Superintendent is responsible for the safe, reliable, and compliant day-to-day operation of a cryogenic natural gas processing facility. The plant includes amine treating, cryogenic processing, engine-driven compression, residue and NGL handling, acid gas handling, and acid gas injection systems.
This role serves as the on-site operational authority, providing direct supervision to plant operators and working side-by-side with maintenance and engineering teams to keep the plant running safely and efficiently. The Superintendent is accountable for production performance, regulatory compliance, troubleshooting during plant upsets, personnel management, and overall plant reliability.
This position requires strong field presence and availability for call-outs during abnormal operating conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- Vocational / Technical Degree (Preferred)
- In lieu of the above education requirements, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Four (4) or more years supervisory or lead operator experience in a cryogenic gas plant (Required)
- Eight (8) or more years natural gas processing plant experience (Required)
- No Licensure or Certification Required.

- On-site cryogenic gas processing facility., Combination of field work, control room monitoring, and administrative reporting., Exposure to rotating equipment, high-pressure systems, and industrial plant conditions., May require nights, weekends, or emergency call-outs.
- Lead safe, efficient operation of the cryogenic gas processing plant on a day-to-day basis.
- Supervise plant operators including scheduling, training, coaching, and performance management.
- Ensure 24/7 plant coverage through proper shift scheduling and staffing.
- Review operator logbooks, shift reports, and turnover notes for accuracy and completeness.
- Verify plant operating parameters remain within safe limits and product specs.
- Maintain strong field presence through routine plant walkdowns and operator interaction.
- Oversee preparation and accuracy of daily production and volume reports, including: o Gas throughput o Residue gas volumes o NGL production o Acid gas volumes o Injection rates o Flaring volumes
- Ensure throughput and product specifications meet contractual and commercial requirements.
- Track operational KPIs and report performance trends to management.
- Provide direct leadership during plant upsets, trips, and abnormal conditions.
- Respond to after-hours call-outs as needed.
- Diagnose issues such as: o Cryogenic recovery losses o Amine foaming or contamination o Compressor instability o Engine performance issues o Off-spec residue gas or NGL products
- Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Support plant startups, shutdowns, and turnaround activities.
- Promote a strong safety culture aligned with company policies and PSM standards.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state regulations, and operating permits.
- Oversee acid gas handling and injection operations in compliance with UIC permits and reporting.
- Lead incident investigations and corrective action tracking.
- Monitor flaring levels and drive reduction efforts consistent with regulatory limits.
- Partner with Maintenance and Engineering to prioritize reliability-focused work.
- Monitor performance of engines, compressors, cryogenic units, amine systems, and injection wells.
- Identify improvement opportunities to increase uptime and reduce operating costs.
- Support maintenance planning, spare parts management, and turnaround preparation.
- Improve operator procedures and training materials.
- Performance will be measured using operational metrics such as: • Plant uptime / availability • Unplanned downtime frequency • Flaring volumes and flare intensity • Acid gas injection compliance • Throughput vs. capacity • NGL recovery efficiency
