JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Manager of Commercial Accounting is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and enhancing accounting functions related to the procurement, processing, and sale of crude oil and refined products. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, enforces compliance with accounting standards, and delivers actionable financial insights. The Senior Manager will recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing team while fostering a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration. This role requires a strategic, solutions-oriented leader with strong critical-thinking skills, the ability to navigate complex challenges, and experience guiding teams through dynamic environments. Preferred qualifications include experience in the energy, oil and gas, or manufacturing industries and Big 4 public accounting experience.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
  • CPA certification (strongly preferred).
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a management role.
  • Experience in the energy, oil and gas, or manufacturing industries (preferred).
  • Big 4 public accounting experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP and commercial accounting practices.
  • Strong leadership and team-building capabilities, with experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle complex accounting issues.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Leadership and Team Development:
    • Build, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals to support business objectives and promote professional growth.
    • Foster a collaborative team culture focused on problem-solving, innovation, and continuous improvement.
    • Establish clear goals and performance metrics, providing regular feedback and coaching to team members.
  2. Accounting Operations and Oversight:
    • Manage and oversee the accounting processes for crude oil purchases, product sales, and inventory management.
    • Ensure accurate recording of commercial transactions in compliance with GAAP and company policies.
    • Lead month-end and quarter-end close processes, including the preparation and review of reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports.
  3. Financial Reporting and Analysis:
    • Provide key financial insights and support decision-making by analyzing margins, cost variances, and other performance metrics.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial reporting with business strategies and objectives.
    • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, management reports, and regulatory filings.
  4. Strategic Planning and Critical Thinking:
    • Act as a strategic partner to leadership, providing recommendations to enhance financial performance and operational efficiency.
    • Proactively identify and address issues, risks, and opportunities within commercial accounting processes.
    • Design and implement process improvements to streamline workflows and improve data accuracy.
  5. Compliance and Internal Controls:
    • Maintain strong internal control systems to ensure compliance with SOX, SEC, and other regulatory requirements.
    • Partner with internal and external auditors to support audit processes and ensure adherence to best practices.
    • Establish and maintain policies and procedures to uphold the integrity of accounting operations.
  6. Collaboration and Cross-Functional Support:
    • Partner with trading, logistics, inventory, and operations teams to ensure alignment between financial reporting and commercial activities.
    • Serve as a key liaison between the accounting team and other business units, providing financial insights to drive decisions.
