Job Summary:

The Director of Commercial Accounting will lead the accounting function for commercial operations in a complex downstream oil and gas environment, overseeing the accurate financial reporting of crude and product purchases, sales, exchanges, and inventory valuation. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with GAAP, SOX, and internal policies while driving operational excellence through system improvements, process enhancements, and team development. The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a deep understanding of commercial accounting in the energy sector, strong leadership capabilities, and a strategic mindset to support business growth and financial transparency.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a high-performing commercial accounting team across multiple functional areas (e.g., crude, refined products, inventory, exchanges).
  • Set clear goals, coach team members, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders in trading, supply & distribution, logistics, and IT to ensure accounting processes support business objectives.

Commercial Accounting Oversight

  • Oversee accurate and timely accounting for crude purchases, refined product sales, and third-party exchanges.
  • Manage the monthly close process for commercial operations, including journal entries, account reconciliations, margin analysis, and variance reporting.
  • Direct the accurate valuation of inventory and monitor inventory movements across terminals, pipelines, and refineries.
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment of complex commercial arrangements, including buy/sell, tolling, and blending.

Process & System Improvements

  • Identify and implement best practices and automation opportunities to increase efficiency and accuracy in commercial accounting.
  • Led system enhancements or ERP integrations related to inventory, trading, or terminal systems.
  • Strengthen internal controls and compliance processes across all commercial accounting activities.

Reporting & Compliance

  • Deliver timely, accurate financial reporting and commercial analysis to executive leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, SOX, internal controls, and company accounting policies.
  • Support external and internal audit processes and regulatory reporting as required.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).

CPA certification (required).

Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance (preferred).

 

Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of downstream oil and gas operations, including trading, inventory, and exchange accounting (required).
  • Experience in a commercial accounting function within an energy, commodity trading, or logistics-driven company (preferred).
  • ERP and trading system experience (SAP, RightAngle, or similar platforms) preferred.
  • A Big 4 public accounting background is a plus.
