GIS Technician

The convenience store retail business is the largest 7-Eleven licensee in the United States and operates approximately 300 convenience stores in central and west Texas and New Mexico.


The GIS Technician is responsible for data collection, creation and maintenance of the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) Geographic Information System (GIS) Database as well as fulfilling map and data requests from within company divisions as well as State and Federal agencies. Incumbent will be highly skilled and capable of producing accurate, customized, and visually appealing maps, reports and queries. Incumbent is responsible for creating and editing shapefiles, file geodatabases, and ArcSDE (SQL) geodatabases. Performs needed maintenance functions with the geodatabase and related software. Assists in deploying the latest GIS technology with other GIS staff, as well as regular interfacing and coordination with other department.



  • Thorough knowledge of ArcGIS, ArcSDE, and SQL
  • Thorough knowledge of basic surveying techniques, GPS software, and equipment such as Pathfinder, Trimble GeoXH, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of utilities, construction, inspection, and alignment sheet drawings with linear referencing and interpretation of topographical maps
  • Knowledge of CAD software
  • Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, and/or summarize data



  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Efficiently schedule and manage time for multiple projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with supervisor, co-workers, other departments, utility companies, contractors, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, and resolve issues.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaoluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.





  • Associates degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field with major coursework in GIS (Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree)



  • 2 years experience with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS Software



  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field with coursework in AutoCAD, database management, and/or programing
  • 4-6 years of experience in developing and maintaining GIS data for utilities or other GIS output products including use of ESRI software and Global Positioning System (G.P.S.) units for data collection
  • Prior experience working in the field on oil and gas operations
