Process Safety Management Specialist

Job Summary:

Performs analyses and develops solutions to prevent releases of any substance defined as a "highly hazardous chemical" by the OSHA and EPA. Applies a set of interrelated approaches to managing hazards associated with gathering, processing, or transferring natural gas or crude oil to reduce the frequency and severity of incidents resulting from releases of flammable gas or liquids.  Manages changes to various systems, provides guidance to operations management, participates in incident investigation activities, and continually assesses the effectiveness of existing Process Safety Management (PSM) programs and processes.  Provides support in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of an EHS Management System that reflects elements outlined in the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice # 1173 and/or other industry consensus standards across the company.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with implementation and maintenance of PSM documentation and overall PSM compliance activities for company facilities
  • Coordinate with project and engineering groups and other affected stakeholders to align activities and documentation with DKL's PSM program
  • Responsible for preparing, defining, and tracking actions associated with management of change processes, pre-startup safety reviews, incident investigations, compliance audits, and other aspects of the PSM program.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of process safety information, including checking documentation for inspection and testing of covered process equipment.
  • Provides PSM and related safety training to personnel as requested.
  • Participates in safety reviews, work plans, and permits during facility turnarounds and normal operations.
  • Mentor peers, technical, and operating teams with maintaining PSM requirements
  • Other duties as assigned that progress the company EHS programs


Required Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience:

  • 3 years of more coordinating activities associated with PSM programs and EHS management systems including organizing electronic documents & managing database tracking systems. 


Preferred Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelors or technical degree in a related field and/or experience operating a facility.
  • Staff-level experience in the implementation PSM and EHS Management Systems (EHSMS) and governance.
  • Familiarity with Root Cause Investigations and Management of Change processes.
  • Administering and using software that supports PSM and EHSMS elements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capability to organize and write plans, procedures and materials to communicate with peers and and operating units.
  • Adept using MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Vizio) and related tools (MSTeams, Sharepoint).

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Must be willing and able to work “on call” for work having an extended duration or occurring over a weekend, as requested.
  • Must be available for travel up to 50% from office location.
  • Ascend and descend storage tanks and process equipment
