Senior Rail Logistics Specialist

Job Summary:
Highly motivated and adaptable individual that can work in a fast-paced environment to ensure delivery of railcars are meeting both customer and business expectations. Candidate must be a self-starter with demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills. Should have strong interpersonal skills and possess a high level of initiative for automation and innovation to further enhance the value of the team. Exhibits high integrity. Commitment to a culture of diligence and safety is essential.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Rail transportation and logistics planning and execution
  • Manage and optimize the supply of railcars across the network of refineries, terminals, railcar storage locations, and transload sites
  • Coordinate with all relevant groups for logistics and delivery success – Commercial, Operations, customers, rail vendors, railroads, etc.
  • Generate transportation business reports – railcar pipeline, tracking and tracing, fleet snapshot, exception, and more
  • Work to optimize rail schedules and fleet utilization including periodic maintenance
  • Anticipate and prevent issues; create contingency plans; analyze unsuccessful outcomes and enact process improvements
  • Work to minimize demurrage and assessorial expenses
  • Negotiate freight rates, storage and switch fees, and other products and services to support rail logistics
  • Develop KPIs and help to mature the business to better capture relevant metrics
  • Cross-train and support team members
  • Communicate effectively with freight railroads regarding customer service issues and resolutions, placing diversions, and following up on bad ordered railcars
  • Interact with the Commercial team to translate sales into the execution of required rail shipments and record negotiated transportation terms in appropriate systems
  • Collaborate effectively within the department and cross-functionally
  • Support customers and stakeholders with accurate, real-time asset tracking and tracing
  • Build relationships with current and prospective customers and program partners
  • Participate in daily/weekly team operations planning meetings
  • Ability to work well in a team environment navigating high pressure situations
  • Remain highly organized and exhibit strong time management skills
  • Some administrative support when needed – creating shipment patterns, generate BOLs, and reviewing and approving rail invoices
  • Provide ongoing support for the strategic development of the company
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by leadership

Required Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience:
At least 5 years of related experience. Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience. Master's or MBA degree typically preferred.

Preferred Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or other related field; Or, in lieu of degree, at least 4 years of additional relevant transportation experience including one or combination of the following: railroad industry, oil & gas, or petrochemicals (rail strongly preferred)
  • Basic NAFTA import/export
  • Petroleum products industry experience
  • Rail transloading experience

Organizational Leveling:
Requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines. Solves complex problems. Works independently, receives minimal guidance. May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives. Acts as a resource for those with less experience. Level at which career may stabilize for many years or until retirement.


Compliance & Safety

  • Attend required and supplemental Safety training; PSM (Process Safety Management) training, Hazmat certification/training for transportation professionals, and other courses as appropriate

  • Working knowledge of the rail industry and the advantages and challenges of shipping by rail
  • Ability to effectively analyze large sets of data in order to develop and support rail processes and the company’s strategic plan


Work Environment/Physical Demands:


  • Understands not all transportation matters occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; Must be willing to occasionally work outside of traditional business hours
  • Ability to travel to customer sites and field location(s) if/when needed
