The convenience store retail business is the largest 7-Eleven licensee in the United States and operates approximately 300 convenience stores in central and west Texas and New Mexico.

The Process Control Engineer is primarily responsible for ensuring that the control strategies for the operating units are applied such that the units operate safely, efficiently, and environmentally sound.  The Process Control Engineer interacts with console operators, process support engineers, and unit supervisors to keep informed of changes in the unit process/equipment so that control strategies can be modified to meet the needs of the current operation.  This person performs benefit analyses to determine which units in the refinery have the potential for significantly improved operations.  In the design of new control applications, the Process Control Engineer is responsible for providing adequate documentation, operator training, and maintenance of the advanced controls, and will also perform post audits of control strategies to show actual benefits achieved by the controls.  To facilitate these duties, the Engineer must possess an intimate knowledge of the distributed control system (DCS) hardware and operating system.  This person must also be capable of troubleshooting, and modifying all computer programs involved with the control strategies.  The Process Control Engineer will configure points, area database, and graphics building/modification as required.


The Process Control Engineer will interface closely with process engineering, operations, reliability, project engineering and maintenance. The Process Control Engineer is responsible for reports that support the work of those the engineers interface with. 



  • The position requires a strong team player, someone who is self-motivating with a positive “can do” attitude. 
  • Specific duties include design and implementation of process control configurations, tuning control loops, troubleshooting control opportunities and related process control engineer/specialist functions in the DCS and SIS.
  • Knowledge of Networking, virtualization and MS security.  Knowledge of instrumentation installation, specification sheets, calibration, calculations and configuration.
  • Configuration of alarm management system and support alarm rationalization efforts.
  • Prepare summaries and justifications for budgets and projects related to process control systems, and control technology.
  • Utilize company, local, state, and federal policies, regulations and accepted industrial practices to properly design, review and implement projects and analyze operations.
  • Evaluate, develop, and coordinate training related to project implementation and facility related problems.
  • Provide process control assistance, analysis of technology, and root cause analysis of control related problems to improve operational reliability and profitability.
  • Provide work scopes for project implementation and participate as team member.
  • Evaluate, audit, and report on control operations to optimize liquid recovery and energy use.
  • Recommend and/or develop advanced control strategies as well as evaluate, audit, and report control performance related to safety, environmental, and profitability.
  • Communicate operational issues in a consistent manner across, up, and down all levels of the organization.
  • Coordinate outside consultants in process control area.
  • Abilities to communicate technical concepts and solutions effectively and at a high level. 
  • Ensure process safety, safety, and environmental compliance by supporting process hazard analysis, incident investigations, procedure development, management of change, alarm management, pressure protection management, and providing technical assistance for work scope development, assessment of process impacts on equipment, and environmental reviews
  • Support capital project development, define project scopes, complete project estimates, and support design and construction
  • Review projects for technical accuracy and clarity and deliver presentations as required to support project updates, justification, and explanation



Minimum Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering or related technical field or equivalent specific process control specialist experience in a plant environment.


Minimum Required Experience:

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in engineering or process control systems working in a chemical or refining plant environment.
  • Demonstrated technical experience with process control project execution
  • High level of understanding of and experience with process control systems including safety instrumented systems, DCS, PLC’s and process control networks. 
  • Knowledge of Honeywell DCS platforms
  • Experience implementing traditional DCS projects and conversions both DCS and SIS
  • Knowledgeable of Advanced Process Control applications
  • Demonstrate practical application of engineering, and mathematical principles to refinery or chemical processes and unit operations.
  • Ability to effectively use structured approaches in problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Capability of producing results in both a team and individual environment. 
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Advanced Computer skills: ability to access, navigate, learn, and use application software such as Microsoft Office, Excel, data acquisition/historian programs, alarm management, and quality control lab systems.
  • Solid verbal and written communication and technical writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to anticipate and adapt to dynamic situations
